The professional association for design. Portland Chapter

New Sustainability Initiative Underway

A new program aimed at promoting sustainable practices within the design industry has been launched by AIGA Portland. To assure the degree of emphasis needed to significantly move the program forward, a new Sustainability Chair position was created on the Board and Lisa Holmes, the current Secretary, was named to the position.

Raising awareness of the importance of sustainability in design work will be a key goal of the program, as will increasing the focus on sustainability within our chapter and local design community. Part of this effort will be achieved by showcasing local efforts by designers and vendors. Plus, we will work to build an online information resource for our members.

Seeking Committee Members

Step one in this process will be the recruitment of volunteers for a "Green Team" to support the Sustainability Chair. Team members will focus on a variety of tasks, including:

Communications: assisting with submissions to AIGA's internal and external media efforts such as eNews, social networking broadcasts, AIGA Portland website and announcements to the working press.

Resources: researching and compiling sustainability resources within the printing, paper, packaging, manufacturing, distribution, and any other design-related industries, as well as venue and catering options for events.

Events: supporting AIGA Portland events focused on sustainability such as CompostModern, the Urban Forest Project and the 2009 AIGA Leadership Retreat.
