AIGA Student Portfolio Day a Success!

As in years past, we had a great turnout for Student Portfolio Day. This year the event brought together junior and senior design students, local professionals, speaker presentations and great networking opportunities. AIGA Portland is pleased to provide this event to support our student community, and we wish them all great success.

Student Portfolio Day would not have happened with the efforts of the Event Committee, Larry Lotz, Marjorie Conroy and Barry Wall; the entire team of volunteers who reviewed portfolios, moved furniture and everything in between; our generous sponsor, Spicer Papers, who supplied each student with a goodie bag of samples, booklets, and a copy of "Print" magazine; PNCA for hosting and providing the AV equipment; and Robynne Raye of Modern Dog and Pete McCracken of Crack Press for great poster design and printing. Signed copies of the poster will be available for $5 at this month's dMob.

Design For Democracy: Get Out The Vote Initiative

In mid-May, we will post guidelines on the AIGA website so that any AIGA member can begin working on a submission to the online Get Out the Vote gallery. Members will be able to download the instructions, the required EPS containing the identity and tagline and the required release form. Posters submitted to the gallery will be reviewed using the same criteria as for print submissions; details will be in the instructions. The gallery site will be launched as part of a major PR push on July 1.

Other June Events
We have two events lined up for June: Socio 12, our Members' party, sponsored by Stora Enso North America and "Via Conversation," an insightful and funny presentation from International Paper featuring a designer and printer facing off on topics like the manufacturing process; print production and the designer; and the role that paper plays in all of it.

While volunteer extraordinaire Jessica Bernert and her team are managing Socio 12, we are still in need of volunteers for "Via Conversation," which is in the early planning stage. Do you like to manage projects? You can oversee the event, being a leader for the other event team members. Are you more of a hands-on person? Set up and clean up are always fun and a great way to meet others. Is technology your passion? AV needs await your special talents. We'll have other needs too-let us know how you can help by contacting volunteer@portland.aiga.org with your specific talents and/or interests.

We'd love to work with you, and your participation will allow our chapter to grow and strengthen. With your help, we can make this event happen!

AIGA Portland Community Bulletin

Visit and learn about local events of interest to the design community. AIGA Portland does not sponsor these events, but as your trusty hub for information on the design profession, we thought you ought to know about these things. If you have an event that you would like to have posted please contact events@portland.aiga.org. The programming chair evaluates all requests against our AIGA mission and if appropriate we will post the event to this section.

AIGA Initiatives

In the March Roundtable event, some members voiced ideas that they felt AIGA could be or should be doing. In fact, some of those ideas are already in place. We encourage you to visit to see what's happening on the national level. When you join AIGA, you are joining a national organization with over 16,000 others; make the most of your investment by visiting www.aiga.org often.

The Case of the Missing Benefits

All Professional and Associate Members should be receiving two monthly newsletters via email, "Communiqué" and "Design:Business." All Student Members should be receiving "Communiqué" (and can access Design:Business" with their login information). If you are not receiving these newsletters, please check with your IT people to have your spam filters adjusted, as they may be filtering out your newsletters.

AIGA Harvard Business School Advanced Design Leadership Program

AIGA and Harvard Business School will offer the second annual advanced leadership program, "Business Perspectives for Design Leaders," a one-week program to provide experienced designers with a chance to master the perspective of their clients toward business. It is available to only forty candidates who will live (and work) in the executive housing at Harvard Business School and be taught by the school's best faculty. Selection is competitive, based on the qualifications and experience of candidates. The program will be offered from August 15-August 20, 2004, at Harvard.

This will be an exciting opportunity for a significant mid-career enhancement in your skills, perspective and effectiveness. The timing is perfect for offering new services to clients as the economy rebounds. We hope you will consider it today. Visit www.aiga.org/businessperspectives for more information and an application form.

Looking for a job?

You can now post a portfolio containing samples of your work, a personal statement, résumé and contact details. Remember to update your Design Jobs account summary so that you are automatically notified when positions are posted that fit your criteria.
