Design for Good Director

Time Commitment: 5 – 8 hours a week
Minimum Tenure: 2 years
Maximum Tenure: 6 years
Minimum Member Status: Any membership level


Overall mission:

AIGA’s Design for Good initiative strives to foster community and create positive social impact. As designers, we have powerful skills that can be used to communicate, activate, engage, and motivate people. Through projects, workshops, speakers, long-term initiatives, and networking events our goal is to create opportunities for people who wish to be involved in this area. We are looking for someone to lead these efforts in the role of Design for Good Director.

The Design for Good Director is supported by and works closely with our Programming Director, Content Director, Promotions Director, and Committee Chairs to develop and promote Design for Good programs and content.

The Design for Good Director is also in a position to collaborate with other board Directors, especially the Education Director, Equity & Inclusion Director, and Women Lead Director, where any interest, mission, and purpose may overlap.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Communicate AIGA’s Design for Good initiative(s) and share those efforts with the board and community
  • Engage with the Portland design community and continually develop and evolve the Design for Good strategy for AIGA Portland
  • Lead and mentor a team of volunteers, including developing and amending role descriptions
  • Present new program proposals with the board
  • Establish and lead monthly meetings with the Design for Good Committee
  • Create and share case studies with the board when projects are completed

  • Interest in systems change and paradigms shifts that bring greater equity to the creative industry  
  • Experience developing and executing events/campaigns that require managing budgets, developing communications, creating schedules, and organizing people 
  • Experience developing and executing communication strategies
  • Ability to take high-level goals and values and put them into action
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly collaborative
  • Self-motivated
  • Manages time well
  • Have a creative or business network to rely on for support and networking

You need to know how to use most of the following programs

  • Adobe CC, Basecamp 3, Eventbrite, G Suite, Slack, and WordPress

Shared Responsibilities of the Board

  • Attend mandatory internal events, monthly board meetings, and retreats
  • Show up and represent at AIGA Portland events (we suggest attending as many as your schedule allows)
  • Proper personal time-management in order to complete the responsibilities outlined in this job description
  • Ensure sponsors and partners are treated well and represented at events and online content
  • Demonstrate understanding and proper-use of AIGA brand guidelines
  • Actively engage in communications and meetings with representatives from other creative groups, firms, businesses, or other like-minded organizations that will create sponsorships and partnerships with AIGA Portland
  • Be able to properly speak about what AIGA is and promote AIGA membership
  • Actively document processes and resources to handoff and onboard the next director in this position
  • Must properly represent the chapter and adhere to the AIGA Standards of Professional Practice

Tenure

  • An official Board Director is committed to serving a minimum of a two–year term. Board Directors are encouraged to continue serving additional terms once their initial two–year term ends. An individual can not serve more than three consecutive terms (a maximum of six years) on the board.
  • You are responsible for organizing and updating your process, contact lists, and work. These will become resources that you will use to onboard the incoming director prior to vacating the position.
