Career Tools: Online Workshops

Looking for a creative outlet?

Share your ideas and skills with Portland’s creative community by hosting a short, interactive Career Tools workshop.

We’re looking for our fellow creatives who want to host short, online workshops for the community—you bring the ideas and content, we’ll do the set-up, promotion, and leg work!

With many designers and illustrators in quarantine, we know there are creative people with incredible talent who want to make a few bucks  and we want to help. We’re not talking “quit your day job” money, but these days every bit counts.

What is Career Tools?

Career Tools is a practical professional development workshop series and online resource designed to provide relevant, ongoing, and experiential learning for Portland’s design community.

What Topics Can I Propose?

Propose anything that will help people launch, grow, or adjust their creative career. Do you know a lot about contracts and copyright or have a great method for setting costs and invoicing? Tell us! Are you awesome at putting together a marketing strategy for yourself or know how to build a strong community? Great! Do you have lessons learned from clients from hell or the best way to pitch projects? Let us know! Are you great at lettering, illustration, or want to talk about trends in UX design?  Wonderful, let’s have it!

How Can I Propose a Workshop?

Submit your proposal to us using this online form. Once you complete and submit the form, your proposal will be reviewed by the Career Tools team who will follow up for further information. We cannot guarantee that every proposal will be run (we’re humans with limited capacity), but we will review each of them.

Check out the proposal form here and propose a workshop.

 How do I get paid?

During quarantine, all workshops will be promoted online with a sliding scale for pricing from free tickets to $25 donations. A small amount of money will be reserved to cover promotional costs, but the rest that is generated goes to the person running the workshop. Furthermore, each workshop will include an opportunity to tip the person running the workshop and all tips will go directly to you.

What are the Requirements

  • To run a workshop,  you must be an AIGA member. You can wait until your workshop is accepted to become one, but you must join prior to running a workshop.
  • Online workshops must run between  30 min.–1 hr.
  • Workshops are not lectures, your workshop must allow at least half its time for either active engagement in creating something or interaction with and between the participants.
  • Workshop content must be your own (no stealing) and you must be willing to allow us to put a synopsis/guide/outline of the workshop on our careertoolspdx.com site once it’s launched to further serve the creative community.
