Using Psychology to Build Better Products and Services

A look at the psychology fundamentals that can guide designers and influence how people process and interact with the interfaces we create.

An understanding of psychology—specifically the psychology behind how users behave and interact with digital interfaces—is perhaps the single most valuable non-design skill a designer can have. The most elegant design can fail if it forces users to conform to the design rather than working within the “blueprint” of how humans perceive and process the world around them. This talk dives into how designers can apply key principles from psychology by deconstructing familiar products and services to provide clear examples of how UX designers can build interfaces that are more human-centered and intuitive. Attendees will learn which psychology concepts are most useful for designers, methods and frameworks for applying these principles to their work, and the ethical implications of doing so.

You'll learn:

  • The principles of psychology most useful for designers
  • How these psychology principles relate to UX heuristics
  • How psychology relates to new technology such as AI and spatial computing
  • Predictive models including Fitts's law, Jakob's law, and Hick's law
  • Ethical implications of using psychology in design
  • A practical framework for applying principles of psychology in your design process
