Window Light Workshop: How to Make Great Portraits Without the Gear [PDX Design Month]

Window Light Workshop: How to Make Great Portraits Without the Gear

Are you a designer or communications professional who sometimes has to take pictures? Maybe you don’t have the budget to hire a professional but you still have standards and don’t want the team photos to suck? Then this event is for you! In the Window Light Workshop, you’ll learn how to create compelling portraits using only natural light and simple tools.

This hands-on session is tailored for non-photographers who want to elevate their visual storytelling without expensive gear. Got an iPhone? Perfect. We’ll cover practical, easy-to-master techniques like understanding light direction, lens choice, and subject positioning, plus how to use basic tools like reflectors, diffusion, foam core, and seamless paper. The first hour includes a demo of essential concepts, followed by two hours of practice in studio with feedback. Bring a camera if you have one, but smartphones are welcome. No, really!

Space is limited to 40 people. Want to shoot? There are 12 ten-minute slots, first come, first serve. Sign up at the door, so arrive early to grab yours! $10 suggested donation at the door.
