PDXDF: Introduction to Scent Design

Whether you're new to scent or just curious about its potential, this hands-on workshop will provide you with an introduction to the theories, applications, and opportunities of scent design. You will also learn the basics of creating your own scents, including how to choose aromatic materials, how to smell and work with the materials, and how to translate your inspiration or creative concept into a scent formula. You will leave the workshop with a good foundational understanding of scent design, and your very own blended scent to prove it.

This introductory workshop is designed for creative professionals interested in concepting and designing scented products or experiences, artists interested in incorporating scent into their art practice, and makers/hobbyists interested in creating their own custom scents.

  2. Guided material exploration: Smell a curated collection of familiar and unique aromatic materials and compare their aesthetic properties
  3. Hands-on creation: Blend your own custom scent based on an artistic concept using all natural materials

No prior scent experience is necessary. All materials are included.
