Stefan Sagmeister, one of the world’s most provocative artists, comes to Portland to share his latest ideas - and a sneak peak into his latest work. For over twenty-five years, Sagmeister has been making work that challenges and transforms. Celebrated for his album covers (the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, Talking Heads), and winner of two Grammys for package design, he’s garnered practically every international award out there. But Sagmeister isn’t just known for great design – defying convention and boundaries, his work incites new ways of thinking. Through his unique synthesis of typography + photography + performance art, and interactive exhibits that meet his audience somewhere beyond familiar categories and forms, Sagmeister deals in concepts like time itself - reflecting just what it is to be alive.

In this rare talk, he’ll explore happiness as only he can conceive the possibilities. Then Portland will get even happier as Sagmeister unveils the newest art he’s been creating.

About Stefan Sagmeister:

Stefan Sagmeister is a New York based designer and artist. An Austrian native, he received an MFA from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and as a Fulbright Scholar, his master’s at the Pratt Institute in New York. Working in design for over thirty years, he has influenced through his renowned album covers, and innovative ad campaigns for companies like Levis among others.

In the past few years, Sagmeister’s The Happy Show has toured worldwide. The installation, part personal narrative and part social investigation, blends film, print, infographics, sculpture, and interactive installations - weaving in social data, and inflatable monkeys – in an exploration of what makes us happy. In 2008 the designer’s book "Things I have learned in my life so far" was published by Abrams.

Stefan Sagmeister formed the New York-based Sagmeister Inc. in 1993. In 2012, with the addition of Jessica Walsh, the company was renamed Sagmeister & Walsh.

Sagmeister teaches in the graduate department of the School of Visual Art in New York and lectures worldwide.
